Sotheby's February Sales

The results of Sotheby’s Impressionist, Modern & Surrealist Art Evening Sale, which recently took place in London, have just been announced.

The sale, which featured 75 lots, amassed a total sum of €247,287,288 and achieved a sold rate of 84%. The highest-selling lot was Claude Monet’s Le Grande Canal (1908), which went for £23,669,000 to an anonymous buyer. The second highest-selling lot was Henri Matisse’s Odalisque au fauteuil noir (1942), which went to a private collector for £15,829,000, exceeding the estimated price of £9,000,000 to £12,000,000. The third highest-selling lot was another Monet painting, Les Peupliers à Giverny (1887), which was sold to an American buyer for £10,789,000.

Other notable lots included Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Au lit: le baiser (1892), Pablo Picasso’s Tête (Maquette pour la sculpture en plein air du Chicago Civic Center) (1962-4), Georges Seurat’s Étude pour une baignade, Asnières (1883-4), and Gino Severini’s Ritmo Astratto di Madame M.S. (1915).
