Works from major private collections in Milan auction

An oil and collage by Marino Marini dated 1960 and estimated at between €50,000 and €70,000 will be the first lot in Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Art Auction in Milan, which will take place on November 27 & 27. The piece, titled Cavallo e Cavaliere, is one of two pieces by Marini in the auction.

Marini recently set a record price in the 20th Century Italian Art Sale in London, where a gouache by the artists sold for €116,000.

The sale will also feature a conceptual urban landscape by Mario Sironi, Periferia con Ciminiera, a tempera executed in 1924 that is estimated to fetch €70-90,000.

Further highlights include two masterworks by Afro, Portorose (estimated to fetch €180-250,000) and Composizione (estimated to fetch €150-200,000). The first, dated 1963, comes from a Tokyo private connoisseur, whereas the second is part of a Milanese collection.

“The selection of works that will be offered on November 26 and 27 has been made on quality and rarity criteria especially considering the international market trends and the collectors’ demand,” said Raphaelle Blanga, head of the Modern and Contemporary Art Department, Sotheby’s Milan.

“This Milanese auction represents a unique opportunity to acquire masterworks coming from two distinguished private Italian collections that represent the most requested artists.”
